Curriculum

Curriculum Programs
Gaven State School is committed to Essential Learnings. Every unit is created using technology software and includes: student outcomes, assessment, resources, activities, global outcomes, technology, community and thinking focus and culmination activity. Core Learning Areas of Literacy and Numeracy are given the highest priority. Each child at Gaven State School is involved in an Instructional Reading Program designed to have children being instructed in reading at their own level.

Culmination
Culmination Days occur 4 times per year, at the end of each unit of work. Parents are encouraged to come to the school to see the achievements of your child during the term. This is an ideal opportunity for parents to monitor the effectiveness of our approach to education.

Technology
Gaven State School has a fully functional Computer Lab and an additional Mini Lab in the Resource Centre where classes can go as a group to work on their computer skills. The Labs are networked and students can access their work from the computers in their classroom.

All students are required to have an Internet Agreement signed by themselves and their parents to enable access to the World Wide Web.

Extracurricular Activities
Two programs are operating:
• Strings Program begins in Year 3
• Multi Program (woodwind, brass, percussion) begins in Year 4

Children who enroll in these programs are committed for the remainder of their primary schooling at Gaven State School. This commitment involves the purchasing of appropriate uniforms, regular practice and attendance at special events. A limited number of instruments are available for lease.

All students have the opportunity to participate in the junior and senior choir.

Camps and Excursions
At times throughout the year, children will be attending educational excursions. These excursions are deemed to be of educational value and interest. Details of the excursion will be sent home with a permission slip and medical form to be completed and returned to school with any monies for the cost of the excursion.

For the upper school, students have an opportunity to participate in camps of several days duration. Details of the excursion will be sent home with a permission slip and medical form to be completed and returned to school with any monies for the cost of the camp.

Religious Education
An Ecumenical Religious Education Program is conducted by a team of lay people and clergy for one 30 minute session each week. All children participate unless parents request otherwise by sending a written note informing that their child is not going to participate in religion.
